Pick Pockets Love Tourists

In every Italian train station, you will come across many different signs that warn against pickpockets and recommend to only ask station attendants for directions.

Here is one example of how true at least one or both of these statements really is:

During our first weekend in Italy, a small group of us decided to take a side trip to Rome. After many hours of walking, we left the Coliseum and the ancient Roman Forum, to board the train to head back to our hotel.

As I stood pressed against many different people, a teenage girl suddenly brushed past me. Immediately, I think of all the warnings we have been given about pickpockets and I reach out and grab her arm. By this point I wasn’t sure if I had been pickpocketed but I was certain I didn’t want her to get away if she had.
