Our Work is Our Play!
In Magic Bites, by Ilona Andrews, you have a new heroine in a different setting. There are no “games” to survive, just magic fluctuations, werewolves, vampires, and other terrifying creatures. These are not the nice creatures that readers have come to associate with vampires and werewolves; instead these are ghoulish creatures that thrive on pain and suffering. Vampires are mindless beings created by a virus, that unless controlled by a navigator will kill everything with a pulse. Werewolves are shape-shifters that have complete control over when they change, and don’t randomly go around killing people.
Kate is our heroine in this series. She can use magic, when magic is active, and she is a mercenary that fights for her own reasons. At this time in our history, technology has collapsed (partially). It reached its peak 200 years ago and magic re-entered the world, but because time is like a pendulum, magic rises (sorcerers shoot fire balls from there hands) and when it falls technology reigns (and then the police shoot said mages with their now working guns).
One moment you are casting spells, then magic is gone and your car works again. But, werewolves, ghouls, upirs, vampires, and many other creatures are active at all times. Parts of the city are completely taken over, murder is rampant, and you can’t tell who the good guys really are.
Kate was born with abilities that enable her to do the things she does. Her parents are gone, her guardian has just been murdered and you have to ask, is this choice or chance? You decide.
