Our Work is Our Play!
Kate Daniels, works for the Order, a guild that protects the innocent; she also freelances for the mercenary guild. She can use a sword to kill anything; use magic power-words that kill the user unless that person is very powerful; she can control vampires like the necromancers; recover from wounds that would kill a normal person; and is immune to everything because the magic in her blood won’t allow any infection, even lyc-v which is what changes someone into a were-animal. Why? Because she is the product on an ancient being, who is currently known as Roland, and a powerful Russian witch, Kalina.
Roland is the commander of The People (the necromancers that control the vampires). He can build weapons and armor from his own blood that are undefeatable. In the past, he was referred to as the builder of towers, and built great empires. He has had children before, but has always ended up destroying them because they eventually challenged him. He swore to never have children again, until he met Kalina. When Kalina gets pregnant with Kate, she knows that eventually he will want to kill the child so she decides to run away.
All of Kalina’s power isn’t known, but we do find out that she can cast spells that control the mind. We know this because when Kalina decides to run away, she casts a spell over Roland’s warlord, Voron. Voron is devoted to Kalina, and after her death he continues to take care of Kate. Unfortunately, Kate finally realizes that although Voron may have loved her mother, he has raised Kate to kill her father only because Roland had killed Kalina.
Kate gets the collective powers from both of her parents. Unluckily for her, in Magic Strikes, she gets the chance to test some of her powers, against one of her father’s (Roland) weapons.
